our heritage
the house
Gaius Merricroft opened his watchmaking shop in a city learning to build on an extraordinary scale. He chose to work at another: the space inside a pocket watch. He brought generations of family experience in European watchmaking, a network of skilled craftspeople, and an exacting interest in small mechanisms. His clients included the industrialists, financiers, and travelers shaping a changing America. Their commissions helped establish a name that would become known far beyond Metropolis. The work expanded from watches to scientific timing, precision instruments, and increasingly intricate mechanical systems. Horology remained at its center.Today, Merricroft is an American watchmaking house with a continental craft inheritance and a continuing home in Metropolis, Delaware. Our timepieces carry that history in their proportions, their finishing, and the engineering beneath the dial.
the gamechanger
GENETIUM®
After decades of research in our Somerset manufacture that began in 1901, we are proud to introduce Genetium®: a material that redefines the very nature of timekeeping. A material that is not forged, but cultivated.By bridging the gap between advanced metallurgy and organic architecture, we have created the world’s first truly self-reliant caliber.
our collection
the apex
A timepiece that bridges mechanical mastery with dynamic material science. Housed in a hyper-dense, forged tungsten chassis designed to provide the optimal micro-environment for its Genetium® core, The Apex is our most uncompromising caliber. It adapts to your kinetic rhythm and ensures a legacy of uninterrupted precision.
the registry
a lifelong bond
Ownership of a Merricroft is an exclusive, binding partnership. Due to the autonomic, adaptive nature of a Genetium® caliber, all timepieces must be returned to our Kentucky or Somerset facility every five years for mandatory recalibration and harmonic pruning.

from the desk of ashley merricroft
A message from our CEO, Ashley Primrose Merricroft, on being an ethical, environmentally and socially conscious watchmaker in the twenty-first century — and how Merricroft contributes to the betterment of the world.
1651 — A New Beginning
Our history began with loss.During the English Civil War, our ancestors, landed gentry of the Crown of England, backed the wrong side and lost everything they had in the old kingdom. Everything, that is, except our ingenuity and determination. Ousted from their homeland, four Merricroft brothers traveled across Europe and honed their skills in the continental houses of horology. With penchants for craftsmanship and precision — accompanied by an equal taste in luxury, the four brothers set out to become the best watchmakers in continental Europe.
The Old Merricroft Estate in Hemingford Abbots, Cambridgeshire, remains an enduring connection to the family’s English origins.﹎Late seventeenth century — The First Apprentices
In the workshops of continental Europe, the first Merricroft apprentices begin their education in horology.
Working under established craftsmen, they learn the patient disciplines of the watchmaker’s bench: shaping components, assembling movements, regulating mechanisms, and finishing surfaces by hand. Knowledge is acquired through years of practice, observation, and correction.
These apprenticeships establish a relationship with craftsmanship that successive generations will deepen. Across the Dutch Republic, France, and the Swiss cantons, the family develops the expertise and professional connections upon which its watchmaking tradition will grow.﹎Eighteenth century — Generations of Precision
Horology became an increasingly important part of Merricroft family life. Experience passed between generations, enriched by relationships with watchmakers, instrument makers, and specialists in precision manufacture.
The family’s interests extended from clocks and watches to the mechanisms that make accurate measurement possible. Reliability, compactness, and careful finishing emerged as lasting priorities.
Through this gradual accumulation of knowledge, Merricroft developed a distinctive engineering ambition: to bring greater mechanical capability into ever smaller spaces.﹎Nineteenth century — Gaius Merricroft and the New World
Gaius Merricroft carried the family’s horological knowledge across the Atlantic and establishes a watchmaking shop in Metropolis, Delaware.
He arrived with capital, precision machinery, and longstanding connections to European craftsmen. America’s industrial expansion presented an extraordinary opportunity. In an age shaped by names such as Carnegie, Rothschild, Rockefeller, and Morgan, a growing class of industrialists and financiers sought objects distinguished by their craftsmanship and prestige.
Gaius recognizes a place for Merricroft on their wrists.
His shop laid the foundations of the modern family fortune. Metropolis became the home of an American watchmaking house whose reputation will reach far beyond the city.﹎1901 — The discovery of Genetium
The discovery of Genetium in 1901 opens a new chapter in Merricroft’s pursuit of enduring precision. Distinguished by its resilience, resistance to friction, and remarkable capacity for renewal, the material offers new possibilities for preserving the performance of intricate mechanical movements.Through sustained research, Merricroft learns to guide these properties within the carefully balanced architecture of a timepiece. This work lays the foundations for the Genesis Component, allowing mechanisms to compensate for wear and restore function with an unprecedented degree of autonomy. For a house that has long believed a watch should outlive its first owner, Genetium brings an enduring ambition closer to realization: exceptional craftsmanship, designed to continue across generations.﹎Present day — A Continuing Heritage under Ashley Primrose MerricroftUnder the leadership of Ashley Primrose Merricroft, the house continues to develop the relationship between traditional craftsmanship and advanced engineering. Her work extends Genetium the Genesis Component into increasingly sophisticated autonomous systems, carrying the family’s expertise in miniaturization and reconstructive mechanics into new applications. Throughout this expansion, the watch remains a defining expression of Merricroft’s attention to scale, precision, and endurance. Her leadership also brings renewed scrutiny to the company’s institutional history. Preserving its archives and continuing reparative work with Jalasvevan communities whose labor had been historically undervalued by the company are part of an ongoing responsibility. From its home in Metropolis, Merricroft carries this inheritance forward: the objects, the knowledge, and the obligation to understand how both were made.
At Merricroft, we believe the greatest mechanisms should do more than just withstand time. They should also adapt to it.For over a century, horology has been limited by the physical degradation of static materials. To transcend this, we developed Genetium®, our proprietary, self-sustaining metamaterial. Bridging the gap between heritage craftsmanship and dynamic material science, Genetium® is an adaptive alloy that allows our timepieces to achieve unparalleled longevity and flawless, uninterrupted precision.Traditional mechanical movements rely on a finite reserve of wound tension. A Genetium® caliber is entirely self-sustaining. Its core matrix is engineered to draw upon the natural kinetic rhythm and thermal signature of the wearer. By converting your body heat and daily movement into continuous structural tension, a Merricroft timepiece achieves a state of perpetual equilibrium, requiring no winding, no rotors, and no traditional power reserves. It is powered simply by the act of being worn.A watch designed to last generations must be able to endure the unpredictability of life. Genetium® possesses an intuitive structural memory. Through a proprietary process of dynamic micro-crystallization, the material reacts to mechanical stress and kinetic shifts. Should the movement experience shock or standard wear, the Genetium® alloy organically redistributes its mass at a microscopic level, seamlessly smoothing worn pinions and bridging micro-fractures to maintain perfect factory calibration. With Genetium®, your timepiece, like the name that created them for you, will endure.
Genetium® is exclusively housed within the Merricroft Apex Collection. Production is strictly limited to ensure uncompromising standards of cultivation and lifelong stewardship.

My father handed me the keys to Merricroft during one of those family dinners that had gone stale after all the interesting topics had run out. We were done talking about other families, the men and women I may or may not be dating, Superman, and even how where we would be observing Christmas — a holiday none of us even remembered celebrating or even caring about. His words to me were simple: “Do better than I did.” One sentence, four words, a lifetime to prove to him and — ultimately — myself that I made good on that wish. At the time, the supposed realization of this abstraction was simple. Make sure that Merricroft kept breaking records every wuarter, introduce new lines that take watchmaking further than what the industry taught was possible, rinse, repeat. But then, I was informed about Jalasveva.Apparently, my father, if we are going by the way he viewed things, knew about it too late. Our involvement in the Southeast Asian open-air prison was one of Merricroft's best-kept secret. Held close to the chest of the old guards that even my father was not a part of.As his daughter and as CEO, I call horseshit. The thing about corporations is that we have become so brainwashed by decades of consultants and shareholder meetings that we — sometimes subconsciously — launder our sins through respectable language and euphemisms. My father didn't ‘find out’ about Jalasveva too late. He looked away and kept looking away until it was no longer convenient to do so.With me, that changes. Now — before I get too far in my self-congratulation, I would like to acknowledge that I am not — in any way — connected by heritage to the island my company had extracted too much from. I have, however, been fortunate enough to learn from a Jalasvevan man that had become so near and dear to my heart. My gratitude is not because he performed the role of some perfect spiritual guide for me, but because he found it within his heart to educate an unbelievably ignorant person that doubtless had stumbled more than he and I could care to count. With all that said, under my stewardship, Merricroft will no longer be making payments or any other form of investment to the governments of the United States and of the Republic of Indonesia that would give us access to Jalasveva and its populace. Instead, through our outreach and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs, Merricroft will seek to embrace, work together, and — most importantly — empower the Jalasvevan community in the city of Metropolis, the state of Delaware, and beyond. I personally ask that every relevant stakeholder support us on this first step to right the wrongs of Merricroft's past.I am not perfect, and I remain willing to be corrected, to listen, and to do better.Lastly, I will end with a cliché — a slogan that had followed my ancestors out of England, into mainland Europe, and across the Atlantic to the New World: we endure.﹎Sincerely,
Ashley P. Merricroft
